Tractor Supply outlook remained unchanged on October 22, 2026, as the rural lifestyle retailer reported stronger third-quarter sales but lower profit. Management reaffirmed its full-year targets, including net sales growth of 2.5%–3.5% and comparable store sales ranging from a 1% decline to flat.

  • Higher transportation costs and pricing investments weighed on margins, with diluted earnings per share falling to $0.43.
  • Full-year guidance remains unchanged, with reported diluted EPS of $1.78–$1.88 and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.90–$2.00.

Tractor Supply outlook keeps annual targets unchanged

The company’s third-quarter results and fiscal 2026 outlook announcement maintained its annual financial targets after the quarter ended September 26. Chief Executive Hal Lawton said improving sales momentum and actions involving value, pet, digital and convenience gave management confidence in delivering within its guidance.

The annual earnings targets distinguish reported results from adjusted measures. Adjusted guidance excludes the Petsense impairment and VIP Petcare acquisition costs recorded in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. Those exclusions mean the two earnings ranges should not be treated as interchangeable.

The unchanged sales outlook also allows for comparable store sales to remain negative for the full year, despite the modest increase recorded in the third quarter. Comparable sales were down 0.3% over the first nine months.

Sales improve, but customer transactions remain lower

Third-quarter net sales increased to $3.91 billion from $3.72 billion a year earlier. Comparable store sales rose 0.4%, following growth of 3.9% in the prior-year quarter.

The comparable sales increase reflected a 0.7% rise in average ticket, partly offset by a 0.3% decline in transaction count. Sales therefore improved without an increase in the number of comparable customer transactions.

Tractor Supply said comparable sales strengthened through the quarter, moving from negative in July to modestly positive in August and improving further in September. Seasonal categories and double-digit digital sales growth helped, while big-ticket and companion animal categories remained soft.

The company opened 23 Tractor Supply stores and closed 74 Petsense stores during the quarter, as previously announced. It ended the period with 2,486 Tractor Supply locations and 135 Petsense locations.

Cost pressure offsets revenue growth

Gross margin fell to 36.4% from 37.4% a year earlier. Tractor Supply attributed the decline primarily to higher transportation and fuel costs and investments intended to strengthen its price-value position.

Selling, general and administrative expenses, including depreciation and amortization, rose 6.8%, faster than sales. The expense ratio increased to 28.6% from 28.1%, reflecting limited comparable sales growth and startup costs for a new distribution center, partly offset by expense controls.

Operating income declined 10.2% to $307.7 million. Net income fell 13.3% to $224.7 million, while diluted EPS decreased 11.6% to $0.43 from $0.49.

The retailer returned $213.4 million to shareholders during the quarter through $88.5 million of share repurchases and $124.9 million in cash dividends.

Conclusion

The reaffirmed outlook leaves Tractor Supply aiming to meet its annual targets despite continued margin pressure. Management scheduled its earnings conference call for October 22 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, providing the next confirmed opportunity to discuss fourth-quarter priorities and winter-season trading.
