FHLBank Atlanta earnings fell to $126 million in the third quarter of 2026, down from $155 million a year earlier, as lower interest rates and reduced average advances weighed on net interest income. The member-owned bank announced the preliminary, unaudited figures on October 22 and declared a quarterly cash dividend at an annualized rate of 6.20%.

Key Takeaways

  • Quarterly net interest income fell $29 million to $183 million as asset income was more sensitive to lower rates than funding costs.
  • Average advances declined year over year, although advances outstanding at September 30 exceeded their December 2025 level.
  • The dividend is scheduled to be credited to members on October 27; the 6.20% rate is annualized.

FHLBank Atlanta earnings reflect lower rates

Net interest income declined from $212 million in the third quarter of 2025. The bank attributed the decrease primarily to lower interest rates affecting interest-earning assets more than interest-bearing liabilities, along with lower average advance balances. Higher average investment balances partly offset those pressures.

Average daily Secured Overnight Financing Rate, or SOFR, was 3.67%, compared with 4.33% a year earlier. Many of the bank’s assets and liabilities are indexed to that benchmark.

The net yield on interest-earning assets narrowed to 47 basis points from 53 basis points. Annualized return on average equity fell to 5.71% from 6.95%, primarily reflecting lower net income.

Average advances fall despite year-end balance growth

Average advances were $95.2 billion during the quarter, down $7.6 billion from a year earlier. However, advances outstanding reached $105.2 billion on September 30, up $10.2 billion from December 31, 2025. These measures describe different periods: a quarterly average can decline year over year while the closing balance rises from the previous year-end.

Advances provide funding to member financial institutions. The bank’s advance funding options include Daily Rate Credit for overnight or short-term liquidity and adjustable-rate products linked to SOFR.

During the first nine months of 2026, the bank originated $357.8 billion of advances. Total assets reached $166.7 billion at September 30, up $20.5 billion from year-end, while investments increased $10.3 billion to $60.3 billion, primarily because the bank held more liquidity investments.

Member dividend payment scheduled for October 27

The board approved the dividend on October 22. It will be calculated using members’ capital stock held during the third quarter and credited to their daily investment accounts at the close of business on October 27, 2026.

The declared 6.20% rate is annualized, not a 6.20% return for the quarter. The distribution is a payment on member capital stock in the cooperative.

Capital compliance and housing commitments

FHLBank Atlanta said it complied with all applicable regulatory capital and liquidity requirements at September 30. Total capital increased $645 million from year-end to $9.3 billion, including $3.1 billion of retained earnings.

The bank had accrued $44 million for its statutory Affordable Housing Program pool to support eligible projects in 2027. For 2026, it also authorized $45 million in voluntary contributions, comprising $14 million for the Affordable Housing Program and $31 million for other housing and community development contributions.

All third-quarter figures remain approximate pending the bank’s Form 10-Q, which it expects to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission on or about November 5, 2026.

Conclusion

Lower interest income reduced quarterly profit even as the balance sheet expanded from year-end. The next scheduled milestones are the October 27 dividend credit and the Form 10-Q filing expected on or about November 5.
