Teledyne earnings increased sharply in the third quarter of 2026, prompting the industrial technology company to raise its full-year profit outlook. Results announced on October 21 showed sales rising 9.4% to $1,684.9 million and net income increasing 23.6% to $272.8 million, led by growth in Digital Imaging.

Key Takeaways

  • GAAP diluted earnings rose 25.2% to $5.82 per share, while adjusted earnings reached $6.72.
  • Digital Imaging sales increased 15%, and group operating margin widened to 20.6%.
  • Teledyne raised annual earnings guidance; its approximately $1.1 billion Varex acquisition remains pending.

Teledyne earnings grow faster than sales

Third-quarter sales, operating profit and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share reached company records. Sales increased from $1,539.5 million a year earlier, including $11.7 million in incremental revenue from recent acquisitions.

GAAP diluted earnings per share increased from $4.65 to $5.82. Non-GAAP diluted earnings rose 20.6%, from $5.57 to $6.72. Operating margin expanded to 20.6% from 18.4%, showing that operating profit grew faster than revenue.

Teledyne’s explanation of non-GAAP financial measures states that adjusted figures supplement rather than replace GAAP results. For the latest quarter, adjustments excluded acquired intangible asset amortization and transaction and integration costs.

Digital Imaging leads growth across all four segments

Digital Imaging sales reached $903.0 million, up 15%, while segment operating income increased 48.1% to $182.7 million. Teledyne attributed the improvement to higher sales and a favorable product mix.

Executive Chairman Robert Mehrabian said organic growth accelerated in the segment, led by infrared detectors and subsystems for space and unmanned applications. Major commercial imaging businesses, including industrial vision sensors and systems and healthcare, also posted year-over-year growth.

Growth extended across the other three segments, though at slower rates: Instrumentation sales rose 1.9%, Aerospace and Defense Electronics increased 4.3%, and Engineered Systems grew 7.8%. Mehrabian said orders had exceeded sales in every quarter over the preceding three years, with funded backlog now nearly $5.3 billion.

Higher annual guidance sets the fourth-quarter benchmark

Management raised both its GAAP and non-GAAP earnings forecasts for 2026. These ranges are forward-looking guidance, not completed results.

For the fourth quarter, Teledyne expects GAAP diluted earnings of $5.68 to $5.83 per share and non-GAAP diluted earnings of $6.60 to $6.70. The adjusted outlook excludes certain transaction and integration costs and acquired intangible asset amortization.

Reported quarterly net income also included a $10.6 million mark-to-market gain on Varex shares held by Teledyne. That gain was recorded in other income rather than operating profit.

Cash generation supports buybacks and pending Varex deal

Operating cash flow reached $352.5 million, compared with $343.1 million a year earlier. After $33.0 million in capital expenditures, free cash flow was $319.5 million, up from $313.9 million.

Teledyne repurchased $224.6 million of shares during September and through October 19 at a weighted average price of $607.03. That period extends beyond the third-quarter end, so the amount is not solely a quarterly buyback total.

The company’s approximately $1.1 billion cash acquisition of Varex, announced in August, is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, Varex stockholder approval and other customary conditions. Teledyne plans to use cash and available credit-facility borrowings; Varex would join Digital Imaging after closing.

Conclusion

The next scheduled milestone is Varex’s special stockholder meeting on October 28, 2026. The acquisition remains conditional, while Teledyne’s higher annual earnings outlook sets the benchmark for its fourth-quarter performance.
