Northeast Bank earnings rose to $29.0 million, or $3.42 per diluted share, in its fiscal first quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with $22.5 million, or $2.67 per diluted share, a year earlier. The Maine-based bank announced the results on October 26, reporting $534.3 million in quarterly loan production and declaring a $0.01-per-share cash dividend.
Key Takeaways
- Higher average loan balances lifted interest income, despite lower yields across the overall loan portfolio.
- National Lending originations reached a record $258.6 million, while purchased loans totaled $237.6 million invested.
- The dividend is payable November 23, 2026, to shareholders of record on November 9.
Northeast Bank earnings benefit from larger loan balances
Net interest and dividend income before provision for credit losses increased to $58.9 million from $48.2 million in the quarter ended September 30, 2025. The bank attributed the improvement primarily to higher average loan balances in its National Lending and Small Business divisions.
Loan interest income increased by $16.7 million, although lower portfolio yields partly offset the benefit of larger balances. The total loan yield was 8.11%, compared with 8.39% a year earlier.
Funding expenses also increased. Interest expense on Federal Home Loan Bank advances rose by $4.3 million because of higher average balances, while deposit interest expense increased by $1.2 million. Deposit growth outweighed the benefit of a lower cost of deposits.
Record originations expand the lending portfolio
Chief Executive Officer Rick Wayne said National Lending originated a record $258.6 million of loans during the quarter. The division also invested $237.6 million in purchased loans, most of which were acquired near quarter-end.
The bank’s national commercial real estate lending and loan acquisitions business combines originating financing with buying existing commercial loans. Its product offering includes commercial real estate loans and the acquisition of performing and sub-performing commercial loans.
Quarterly production also included $35.2 million in Small Business Administration 7(a) loans and $2.8 million in insured small-balance business loans. Total loans, including loans held for sale, reached approximately $4.75 billion at September 30, up 3.55% from June 30.
The growth was concentrated in National Lending. Originated loan balances increased 8.51% during the quarter, while purchased loan balances rose 1.18%. Small Business and Community Banking loan balances declined.
Deposits and wholesale funding support growth
Total assets reached $5.35 billion, up 2.4% from June 30, 2026. Deposits increased $95.3 million, or 2.6%, primarily reflecting growth in time deposits.
Brokered time deposits rose $151.9 million, partly offset by an $8.5 million decline in Community Banking time deposits. Federal Home Loan Bank advances increased $8.8 million, which the bank said funded loan growth.
Shareholders’ equity increased $24.5 million to $628.4 million. Quarterly earnings and stock-based compensation added to equity, partly offset by restricted-stock cancellations used to cover tax obligations on vesting awards.
Next milestone
The next confirmed shareholder milestone is the November 9, 2026, dividend record date, followed by payment on November 23.
