Tata Power and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have signed an agreement to develop ₹250 crore of Mumbai refinery power infrastructure for a new residue-processing project. The infrastructure is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete.

Mumbai refinery power agreement

Under the memorandum of understanding, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and design and develop the associated infrastructure. It is intended to help meet the project’s 90 MW power requirement.

BPCL’s ₹14,203-crore Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit will have a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes a year. It is intended to recover higher-value products from refinery residues and support BPCL’s diversification into petrochemicals. The companies said it is the first project of its kind being executed in India.

Trombay network plans

The agreement is also expected to strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in Mumbai’s Trombay industrial area and support demand from large industrial consumers.

Separately, Tata Power plans to develop a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years. The proposed addition is expected to increase power evacuation capacity and support grid reliability for industrial and commercial consumers.
