A Samsung gaming fine of 20 billion South Korean won, or approximately $15.1 million, has been proposed by South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission over allegedly misleading advertising for Galaxy smartphones and a tablet. As of October 27, 2026, the fine was a proposal, not a completed penalty.
What the Samsung gaming fine concerns
The regulator said Samsung Electronics promoted the gaming capabilities of the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S22 and Galaxy Tab S8 without disclosing performance limits imposed by its Game Optimizing Service during high-load games.
The service was intended to manage heat while gaming. The commission said it restricted CPU and GPU performance regardless of device temperature or conditions, leading to problems such as lag and reduced graphics quality.
The commission said the advertising hindered informed consumer decisions and violated fair advertising laws.
Samsung’s response
Samsung has previously updated its software to let users bypass the performance limits. The company disagreed with the commission’s assessment, saying the service was designed to enhance gaming performance and ensure stable gameplay.
