GMO Internet has warned users of its Onamae.com service about a potential ransomware attack, following an intrusion that involved unauthorized access to customer data and unapproved foreign-exchange transactions.
GMO Internet advises users to protect data
The company advised users to back up their data, disconnect their devices from the internet and power them down ahead of a threatened attack described as scheduled for midday. The available information does not specify the date or time zone for the warning.
The threat was not confirmation that another attack had occurred. The company had not disclosed how many users were affected by the earlier intrusion or the extent of the data breach.
Ransom demand and customer compensation
The hackers demanded $50 million, which GMO publicly refused to pay. The company has committed to compensating affected customers, although the scope of that compensation was not specified.
GMO shares fell nearly 16% during the security crisis and subsequently rebounded approximately 1.7% following the warning. The periods over which those moves occurred were not specified.
