Congress legislators boycotted the final day of the Punjab Assembly session on October 27, 2026, after some of their colleagues were blocked from entering the premises and an altercation broke out with a ruling Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker.

Key Takeaways

  • Congress leaders objected to being stopped at the Assembly entrance, while the speaker said only suspended MLAs could be barred from the House.
  • The dispute followed the suspension of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira for the remainder of the session.

Punjab Assembly entry dispute

Congress leaders Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Partap Singh Bajwa and Pargat Singh were reportedly among those prevented from entering the Assembly premises. An altercation involving AAP MLA Jasvir Singh Raja Gill and senior Congress leaders occurred during a media address by Punjab Minister Balbir Singh.

Balbir Singh accused Congress legislators of political disruption, alleging that they had refused to let him speak to the press. As Question Hour began, opposition leader Bajwa objected to the entry restrictions and Congress legislators protested.

Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan said no MLA could be stopped from entering the House unless currently suspended. Bajwa alleged that the notice used to block entry did not carry the speaker’s signature.

Suspension preceded the boycott

The Assembly had suspended Khaira on the preceding Friday for the rest of the session after Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema moved a resolution against him. Cheema accused Khaira of using unparliamentary language against the chair and deliberately disrupting proceedings.

Bajwa argued that Khaira should still have been allowed onto the Assembly premises, even if the speaker could then prevent him from participating. Earlier, Congress MLAs had burned a broom, AAP’s election symbol, outside the Assembly in protest against what they alleged were government failures.
