Sudan food security is deteriorating amid the country’s ongoing conflict, the United States and 30 other nations warned on October 26, 2026, calling for urgent action to prevent famine.
Sudan food security at risk
The joint statement said an estimated 19.5 million people, or more than 40% of Sudan’s population, are experiencing acute food insecurity. That figure includes 5 million people facing emergency levels.
The signatories cited a warning from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification about the risk of famine in the coming months. They said the number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition could exceed the projected 825,000 without immediate action.
Countries call for humanitarian access
The countries urged the warring parties to remove barriers to aid, facilitate safe and unimpeded humanitarian access and protect humanitarian personnel. The United Kingdom was among the governments that joined the US-issued statement.
The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023. Aid workers estimate it has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced more than 13 million.
