Pune Metro Line 3 is expected to open 17 stations to passengers on November 3, 2026, after safety clearance for part of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the line virtually.

Key Takeaways

  • Safety authorities have cleared 17 of the corridor’s 23 stations; six still need approval.
  • The 23.3-kilometre line is intended to connect Hinjewadi’s IT hub with central Pune.

Pune Metro Line 3 opening and safety approvals

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to attend the inauguration programme at Balewadi Stadium in Pune. The proposed launch follows several delays, and passenger service had not yet begun as of October 27.

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety has cleared 17 stations. Inspections have also been completed at two stations near Balewadi, where approvals are expected shortly. Four others—RBI, Simla Chowk, Mahabaleshwar Chowk and Baner—are still awaiting clearance.

The number of stations that can open will depend on the necessary safety approvals. Officials also said Mahametro is planning a groundbreaking ceremony for its Phase 2 project at the venue.

Commuters press for service

The corridor is intended to offer an alternative to road travel for employees commuting to Hinjewadi’s IT parks. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has urged the Maharashtra government to begin service on the cleared stretch without waiting for a formal inauguration.

Sachin Londhe, president of the Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation, said commuters had raised their concerns with authorities since July 2025. He said an online petition launched in June 2025 collected 39,000 signatures in 40 days.

Separately, a Rs 426-crore plan has been approved for roads, traffic management and last-mile connectivity in Hinjewadi. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority is developing the metro corridor through a public-private partnership.
