The India-EU investment pact remains under discussion, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on October 27, 2026. A separate agreement to protect region-specific product names also requires legal changes that his ministry plans to introduce in Parliament.

India-EU investment pact and product protections

An investment protection agreement would provide a framework for protecting investments made across the two markets. Such agreements typically address fair treatment, unlawful expropriation and mechanisms for resolving investment disputes.

The proposed geographical indications agreement would protect the names of products associated with particular regions in each other’s markets. Examples include Darjeeling tea and Indian handicrafts, as well as European products such as Feta cheese.

The European Union is already a leading investor in India, where about 6,000 European firms are present.

Free trade agreement comes first

India and the 27-nation EU announced the conclusion of free trade agreement negotiations on January 27, 2026. Goyal said the investment and geographical indications pacts would come into force after the free trade agreement is implemented.

The minister said the free trade agreement was likely to be signed in December 2026 and might take effect in March or April 2027. Those dates remain prospective, not confirmed implementation dates.
