The India sugar season for 2026–27 has started on schedule, with nearly 107 mills beginning cane crushing, the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) said on October 26, 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Nearly 87 mills had started operating in Maharashtra and two in Uttar Pradesh.
- Sugar production reached approximately 4 lakh tonnes by October 25, up from around 0.6 lakh tonnes on the corresponding date a year earlier.
- The previous season ended with approximately 36 lakh tonnes of carryover stocks.
India sugar season begins across producing states
ISMA said 17 mills had commenced crushing across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat, in addition to those operating in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Operations in other states are progressing in line with their seasonal schedules.
In Maharashtra, more mills are expected to start in the coming week as cane harvesting gathers pace. Uttar Pradesh is expected to roll out its season in phases: crushing in the western part of the state is expected to begin in the next three to four days, followed by central and then eastern areas as cane matures.
Stocks and imports support domestic supply
The government has extended the duty-free raw sugar import window and introduced stockholding limits to support domestic supplies. Carryover stocks from 2025–26 provide a base for meeting consumption needs as fresh production begins.
ISMA Director General Deepak Ballani said domestic sugar requirements during the festive season were expected to be met comfortably and prices were expected to remain stable. Those are the association’s expectations, not reported price outcomes.
