Natural hydrogen exploration company MAX Power Mining said on October 27, 2026, that its Lawson 5 well identified a hydrogen system 30 kilometers from its original discovery near Central Butte, Saskatchewan. The company has started drilling a follow-up well and begun a separate testing program.
Key Takeaways
- Lawson 5 reached a depth of 2,175 meters and was cased for a future completions program.
- Drilling is under way at Lawson 6, about 8 kilometers southeast of Lawson 5.
- Commercial viability remains unproven; testing will examine flow, concentrations and volumes.
Natural hydrogen testing moves forward
MAX Power said it had begun completions at its Bracken target in southwestern Saskatchewan and expected crews to start testing the Lawson Complex the following week. Lawson 5 will be included in the upcoming Lawson completions program.
The testing is intended to establish whether the hydrogen identified underground can support commercial production. The company said it needs to measure characteristics including concentration, sustained flow, reservoir pressure and recoverable volumes.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Lawson 5 | Drilled to 2,175 meters; 62 meters of core recovered. |
| Lawson 6 | Drilling in progress about 8 kilometers southeast of Lawson 5. |
| Bracken | Completions program has begun at the southwestern Saskatchewan target. |
| Lawson Complex | Testing for flow, concentrations and volume was expected to begin the following week. |
What Lawson 5 adds to the exploration program
The company said Lawson 5 encountered elevated natural hydrogen levels along faults in rock near the western edge of the Prairie Evaporite. It recovered 62 meters of core for analysis and identified helium-prospective zones that may also be examined during completions.
Chief Geoscientist Steve Halabura said further drilling and geophysical work would be needed to determine whether Lawson 5 is connected to the original Lawson Complex or represents a separate hydrogen system.
MAX Power said it has identified active natural hydrogen systems in three areas across central and southern Saskatchewan, separated by as much as 365 kilometers.
Funding and advisory agreements
MAX Power said it raised $1,662,000 through warrant and stock option exercises between September 1 and October 15, 2026. It also disclosed a $400,000 advisory fee, plus taxes, under an agreement with Hampton Securities effective October 13.
Separately, the company increased cash fees under its RazorPitch investor-marketing agreement by US$500,000, bringing total cash consideration to US$850,000. It engaged Emerging Markets Consulting for a two-week awareness campaign at a cost of US$200,000.
Next milestone
The next planned milestone is the start of Lawson testing, expected the week after the October 27 announcement.
