The rupee exchange rate weakened by 7 paise to 95.22 per US dollar in early trading on October 27, 2026, amid elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and a stronger dollar ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision.

Rupee exchange rate swings in early trade

The Indian currency opened at 95.17 per dollar and briefly recovered to 95.11 before slipping to 95.22. It had closed at 95.15 on Monday, when it fell for a third consecutive session. Over those three sessions, the rupee lost 77 paise.

Foreign exchange traders said likely intervention by the Reserve Bank of India helped the rupee recover some ground, although the currency remained under pressure from foreign fund outflows and subdued domestic equity sentiment. The intervention was not confirmed in the available information.

Oil prices and equities add to pressure

Brent crude futures traded at $114.76 a barrel, down 0.91% but still near a six-month high. Analysts attributed the elevated oil price to concerns about supply disruptions following Houthi-led attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure. The dollar index rose 0.06% to 101.86.

Indian equities also weakened in early trade: the Sensex fell 126.16 points, or 0.17%, to 73,480.59, while the Nifty declined 47.30 points, or 0.21%, to 22,706.30. Exchange data showed foreign institutional investors sold a net ₹1,462.49 crore of equities on Monday.
