Nalwa Aero eVTOL executives have briefed India’s civil aviation minister on preliminary flight tests of an experimental electric aircraft, as the Punjab-based company develops a five-seat model for potential uses including air taxis and medical transport.

Key Takeaways

  • A scaled aircraft demonstrated low-altitude hovering and forward flight in preliminary tests, Nalwa Aero said.
  • The company’s type-certification application was accepted in January 2026, but the proposed aircraft has not received final certification.

Nalwa Aero eVTOL design and tests

Founder and CEO Kuljeet Singh Sandhu and chief technology officer Nelson Salas met Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu to present the company’s progress and flight-testing results. The minister expressed encouragement for the effort.

Nalwa Aero’s experimental design combines electric propulsion, a box-wing configuration and tilting rotors. Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft are designed to take off and land vertically, potentially reducing their reliance on conventional runways.

The preliminary tests are an early step in assessing the design. The company said its scaled aircraft achieved both hovering at low altitude and forward flight.

Certification remains ahead of commercial use

Nalwa Aero is developing a five-seat aircraft intended for potential air taxi, air ambulance, tourism, cargo and defence operations. It says it wants to develop the technology in India for domestic and international markets.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation granted the company Design Organisation Approval in June 2025 for eVTOL aircraft in the five-seat-and-above category. Nalwa Aero said its type-certification application was accepted in January 2026.

Neither step amounts to final certification or authorization to carry passengers. Commercial operations will depend on further development, testing and regulatory clearances; no timeline was specified.
