TASMAC payment rules will require customers to pay digitally for single liquor purchases above ₹1,000 in Tamil Nadu from November 1, 2026. Purchases of ₹1,000 or less can still be paid for with cash or digital methods, a senior official at the state-owned retailer said.
How the TASMAC payment rules will work
Accepted digital methods include UPI, debit cards and credit cards. The requirement applies to each single purchase above the threshold, rather than to purchases of exactly ₹1,000.
The official said the mandate would be introduced in phases. Digital payment options are already available across the retailer’s 4,048 shops, although most transactions remain in cash.
Checks for shops and staff
Staff are barred from accepting payments through personal QR codes or individual bank accounts. Supervisors must issue a physical bill for every purchase and verify payment on an official point-of-sale machine before handing over bottles.
The official cited cash-handling risks and complaints of charges above the maximum retail price. Shops will display notices, while district managers are tasked with checking payment machines and network connectivity and conducting weekly reviews.
