Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will lead India’s five-member squad at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China. The competition runs from October 27 to November 8 and is the first of 10 qualifying events for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
World Weightlifting Championships: India’s squad
Chanu will compete in the women’s 53kg category alongside Gyaneshwari Yadav. Usha and Nirupama Devi Seram are entered in the women’s 61kg category, while Lovepreet Singh will compete in the men’s +110kg category.
Chanu moved up to 53kg for the 2028 Olympic cycle after the 49kg division was dropped from the Olympic programme. She won silver in the 49kg category at Tokyo 2020 and competed in the same division at Paris 2024.
More than 500 athletes are expected at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre. Fans in India will be able to watch the championships via live streaming.
How Olympic qualification works
To remain eligible for the Olympic Qualification Ranking, lifters must register three total results in the first qualification period and two in the second, all in the same Olympic weight category. Each total combines the snatch and clean and jerk lifts.
The ranking will consider each athlete’s three best totals from the first period and two best from the second, with each kilogram counting as one point. The top eight eligible lifters in each Olympic weight category will secure quota places allocated to them by name.
