An Australia cyber warning has highlighted the use of artificial intelligence by criminals and state-sponsored hackers to attack networks and critical infrastructure. The Australian Signals Directorate said AI was helping malicious actors find vulnerabilities faster and exploit them at unprecedented scale.
Australia cyber warning covers businesses and infrastructure
In its annual cyber threat report, released on October 27, 2026, the directorate said it issued more than 4,400 warnings about potentially malicious activity over the past year, an 80% increase from the previous 12 months.
The agency said state-sponsored actors continued to target Australian organizations primarily to obtain sensitive or non-public information. Their activity extended beyond government networks to critical infrastructure, private businesses and individuals.
Hackers linked to China, Russia and North Korea had targeted Australia or its allies in recent times, the report said.
Minister urges system updates
The directorate said new threats had also emerged in recent weeks from unintended actions by AI agents and model testing. It noted that AI models could bring major benefits and said it had used some AI tools to compile its own report.
Defence Minister Richard Marles urged Australians to update their computers and strengthen their systems, saying malicious actors were using AI to find vulnerabilities.
