Studentsafe insurance policyholders in New Zealand will begin receiving access to Sonder’s 24-hour health, safety and wellbeing support from October 2026, under a new partnership announced by Allianz Partners New Zealand.

Key Takeaways

  • Eligible policyholders and their family members aged 18 or older will receive access at no additional cost.
  • Sonder offers confidential support by chat, phone or in-person response, with in-app translation across more than 300 languages.
  • The service is intended to complement, rather than replace, institutions’ existing support arrangements.

Who can use Studentsafe insurance support

The service is being introduced for Studentsafe Inbound Medical and Travel Insurance policyholders and their adult family members. Allianz Partners said access would begin from October 2026.

The partnership is intended to give international students another way to seek help, including after hours when institutional services may not be available. It is designed to sit within the existing support framework at institutions partnered with Studentsafe.

What the Sonder service includes

Through the Sonder app, users can contact registered nurses and mental health professionals confidentially by chat or phone at any hour. The service also offers in-person response.

App features include location-based safety and travel alerts, journey monitoring, timed safety checks and an alert that escalates urgent situations requiring additional support. Users can also access wellbeing resources covering topics such as sleep, nutrition and physical activity.

New Zealand’s 2021 Education Code of Practice requires education providers to take all reasonable steps to support international students’ wellbeing. The companies said the service is intended to provide an additional support option alongside institutions’ own arrangements.
