Senator JV Ejercito said on October 26, 2026, that senators should preferably decline an offer to become Philippine vice president if Sara Duterte is removed in the Duterte impeachment trial, citing their role as judges in the proceedings.

Duterte impeachment trial and impartiality

Ejercito agreed with a call from Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano for senators to reject any such offer because accepting it could raise questions about a conflict of interest.

“Ideally, they should not accept it. How can we do that when we are the judges in the impeachment court?” Ejercito said in a media interview. He added that a decision would depend on whom the president offered the position to.

No offer reported

Cayetano’s call followed Senate Presiding Officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s statement that he would decline the vice presidency if Duterte were removed, because he considered it inappropriate to take the post after the Senate had decided her fate.

Ejercito said he had not heard of an offer being made to any senator. He also cautioned that discussing a successor was premature because the impeachment court had not reached a verdict.
