Birla described a period of profound uncertainty, citing regional conflicts and wars alongside economic instability, trade tensions, terrorism and climate change.
He said the consequences of those challenges cross national boundaries and require a spirit of collective responsibility. Representatives of BRICS members including Russia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates were present for his remarks.
A role for parliaments
Birla said parliaments, as expressions of the people’s will, could build mutual confidence and act as bridges of understanding. He stressed the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation in responding to the challenges he identified.
