The Highland Valley strike entered its first full week on October 26, 2026, after more than 1,200 workers walked off the job at Teck Resources’ copper mine in British Columbia.
Highland Valley strike follows contract expiry
Members of United Steelworkers Local 7619 began the strike at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 24. Their previous contract expired on September 30.
All 944 workers who cast ballots supported industrial action, the union said. Negotiations continued around the clock until the walkout began.
Pay and staffing among disputed issues
Compensation, pensions, benefits and staffing levels are among the significant issues in the dispute. Local 7619 President Kyle Wolff said Teck was seeking concessions in the contract.
The Highland Valley Copper Mine, near Logan Lake, opened in the 1960s and produced more than 127,000 tons of copper in 2025.
