Electric two-wheelers were being actively considered by 43% of surveyed Indian owners and intending buyers for their next purchase in 2026, up from 30% in 2024, according to a Boston Consulting Group report released on October 26.

Key Takeaways

  • The share of respondents outright rejecting an electric two-wheeler fell to 29% from 38% in 2024.
  • Electric models accounted for 9.9% of Indian two-wheeler sales in April–August 2026, compared with 5.5% in FY24.

Electric two-wheelers gain sales share

Electric two-wheelers made up 9.9% of total two-wheeler sales in the first five months of FY27, from April through August 2026. Their share was 5.5% in FY24, according to the report, which used Vahan and SIAM sales data through August 2026.

Within the scooter segment, electric penetration rose from 16.8% to 24.1%. The report also said about 180,000 Indians buy their first electric two-wheeler each month.

Electric scooter sales grew at a 54% compound annual rate between FY22 and FY26, more than three times the rate for petrol scooters, BCG said.

What the survey found

The 2026 survey covered 1,600 two-wheeler owners and intending buyers. Metro and Tier 1 locations accounted for 45% of respondents, while Tier 2 locations and beyond made up 55%. The study compared its findings with BCG’s 2024 survey.

Owners rated electric two-wheelers well on running and maintenance costs, comfort, appearance, manoeuvrability, storage and digital features. Remaining concerns included performance on rough roads, suitability for city-to-highway use and longevity.

The report said longevity remained difficult for consumers to assess because most electric two-wheelers had not been owned long enough to judge how they compare with petrol models.
