Envision CEO and founder Lei Zhang received the Sustainability Trailblazer award at the 2026 Reuters Global Sustainability Awards, recognizing his work connecting renewable energy, smart technology and industry.

Envision CEO links AI growth to clean energy

Zhang has argued that energy, alongside computing chips, will become a significant constraint on the growth of artificial intelligence. He has advocated an energy system that is abundant, intelligent and affordable.

The awards, announced on October 26, were in their 17th year. The competition received more than 700 entries, reviewed by an independent panel of 25 judges.

Mission GOBI targets 5 GW by 2030

Zhang launched Mission GOBI in 2026 with a target of developing 5 gigawatts of renewable-powered AI infrastructure by 2030. The initiative aims to locate computing facilities near wind and solar resources and use computing demand to encourage clean-energy investment.

In August 2026, Envision launched Galaxy Campus in Ulanqab as the initiative’s first flagship project. The company says the campus uses renewable electricity and its AI Power System to combine computing with energy management.

When fully developed, the project is designed to support AI computing at gigawatt scale, with capacity of up to 1 million PFLOPS. That figure is a planned maximum, not a measure of current capacity.
