What the Manitoba trade corridor could connect
The three organizations will pursue trade growth opportunities involving the Port of Churchill, the Hudson Bay Railway, CentrePort Canada and DP World’s global logistics network. The agreement also identifies the potential for intermodal connections between Europe and Asia through Canada.
Arctic Gateway owns and operates the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway, which runs from The Pas to Churchill. CentrePort is a 20,000-acre inland port and foreign trade zone with truck, rail and air cargo connections. DP World provides logistics and port terminal services.
Existing infrastructure and trade
CentrePort has attracted approximately $1.5 billion in private investment in recent years and is home to more than 1,000 companies. More than 3.5 million square feet of industrial space has been built or is under construction there over the past eight years.
The Port of Churchill is handling its most diverse range of commodities, including critical minerals, grain and potash, as well as northern supplies to Nunavut. Arctic Gateway said discussions are underway about attracting private investment to modernize the port and expand exports.
DP World handles more than one million twenty-foot equivalent units, a standard measure of container volume, in Canada annually. Its Canadian CEO, Doug Smith, described the agreement as an opportunity to explore more effective connections between the Manitoba assets and the company’s global network.
