A disaster preparedness clinic introduced in Eastern Visayas gives businesses and local government units a way to assess their technology needs and seek help preparing for disasters. The initiative was presented during Handa Pilipinas in Palo, Leyte, on October 7–9, 2026.

How the disaster preparedness clinic works

The Department of Science and Technology’s Eastern Visayas office partnered for the first time with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Tacloban-Leyte chapter to engage businesses in disaster preparedness.

The clinic uses a technology needs assessment tool for businesses and local government units. Based on their assessments, businesses are referred to the appropriate government agency for assistance, which may come from an agency other than the science department.

Local governments visit the clinic

By October 8, the second day of the event, visitors seeking consultations included representatives from Ormoc City, Hindang and Jaro in Leyte, and Mapanas and Pambujan in Northern Samar.

The Visayas leg of Handa Pilipinas also featured exhibits of disaster risk reduction technologies, early warning systems and digital data platforms. Handa Pilipinas is a flagship program of the Department of Science and Technology.
