India’s Supreme Court on October 26, 2026, directed all states and union territories to allocate funds for bar rooms, washrooms and other basic amenities for women lawyers in district and taluk courts.
Facilities for women lawyers
The bench said women advocates should have exclusive bar rooms with facilities wherever they practise, regardless of their numbers. It said high courts and state governments must ensure compliance, including where additional funds or land are needed.
The bench comprised Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
Plea and next hearing
The court was hearing a plea filed by a group of women advocates concerning accessibility, inclusiveness and the long-term sustainability of women in the legal profession. The plea had raised the lack of adequately equipped women’s bar rooms and other essential facilities in courts, tribunals and commissions.
The court scheduled the matter for another hearing on December 2, 2026.
