An Indian Navy squadron arrived in Sri Lanka on October 26, 2026, for a three-day goodwill visit intended to strengthen maritime cooperation, the Indian High Commission said. The First Training Squadron comprises two warships and a Coast Guard vessel.
Indian Navy squadron on training deployment
The visit is part of a long-range training deployment that also includes calls at Port Victoria in Seychelles and Malé in the Maldives before the squadron returns to its base port in Kochi, India.
The squadron provides initial sea training to officer trainees from the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign navies. Five Sri Lanka Navy officer trainees are participating in the deployment.
Cadet exchanges planned
During the visit, officer cadets are due to take part in professional, training and sporting activities with the Sri Lanka Navy. Indian cadets are also expected to visit the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee, while Sri Lankan naval cadets are scheduled to visit the Indian ships.
The squadron is commanded by Captain Tijo K Joseph, who is also the commanding officer of INS Tir. Senior officers are scheduled to meet officials including Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Sri Lanka Navy Rear Admiral Harsha De Silva.
