A Kharge remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a Patna event on October 25, 2026, drew condemnation from the BJP and its allies. The BJP said it would hold protests across India the following day.
What prompted the Kharge remark
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was speaking at a programme marking the 139th birth anniversary of Shrikrishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister. Kharge said Congress would send people involved in alleged irregularities in the SIR process to jail.
An audience member responded that Modi would not go anywhere without a rebellion. Kharge replied, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” meaning that even Modi’s father would go.
The audience member later identified himself as Santhosh Kumar, a Congress worker from Chhapra. He said people had mistaken him for a BJP worker and reiterated that he meant Modi would not go anywhere without a rebellion.
BJP criticism and Congress response
BJP chief Nitin Nabin called Kharge’s language indecent. Home Minister Amit Shah and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also condemned the comment; Choudhary called for an apology from Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Congress said a BJP worker had first insulted Kharge’s late father and claimed that Kharge was referring to Modi’s ideological father, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Leaders of the JD(U), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Hindustani Awam Morcha also criticized Kharge’s language.
Next milestone
The BJP said its nationwide protests would take place on Monday, October 26.
