Congress MP Shashi Tharoor defended the Kharge remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 26, 2026, saying party chief Mallikarjun Kharge had used a common expression and was not insulting anyone’s father.
What prompted the Kharge remarks
Kharge made the comment a day earlier at an event in Patna, Bihar, after an audience member said Modi would not go anywhere. Kharge responded with the phrase “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” referring to Modi’s father also going.
Kharge, who is leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, was speaking at a programme celebrating the 139th birth anniversary of Shrikrishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister.
Tharoor and BJP respond
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi, Tharoor said Kharge’s intended meaning was clear and that the controversy had been exaggerated.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the remarks “extremely unfortunate” and said they had hurt the sentiments of many people. The BJP also criticized Kharge’s language and the Congress party.
