India maritime training plans include a proposed institute in Mumbai that would prepare seafarers for international shipping, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said during a visit to the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
India maritime training partnership
The institute of excellence is being developed as a public-private partnership involving the Maharashtra government and Mediterranean Shipping Company, or MSC. It remains a proposal; the available details do not specify an opening date.
Goyal said developing the skills of young Indians could help the country increase its contribution to the global maritime workforce. The proposed institution is intended to train highly skilled seafarers for that market.
A broader maritime ambition
During the Rotterdam visit, Goyal also highlighted the Sagarmala programme and efforts to expand India’s maritime ecosystem. He said the country should continue pursuing greater growth and improvement.
