How the Maharashtra literacy test works
The Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test was held under ULLAS, or Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society, a programme of the New India Literacy Programme.
The test carried 150 marks and was offered in nine languages, including Marathi, Hindi, English and Urdu. Education director for planning Krishnakumar Patil said around 700,000 learners registered on the ULLAS app appeared for the examination.
Learners return to education
Among the participants was Mangal Baban Mane, 65, from Kolhapur. She had left school because of poverty and difficult circumstances, and later learned Marathi letters, words and counting from her grandson, who is in Class V.
Mane said she can now write her name and do basic addition and subtraction. In Satara district, 60-year-old Vimal Kanu returned for a second attempt after not passing the previous year. Kanu said she can now sign her name and check whether a shopkeeper has given her the correct change.
In the Dhoregaon cluster, 198 newly literate learners took the test at Zilla Parishad Central Primary School and its satellite centres. In-charge headmaster Rajesh Hiwale said they were welcomed with flowers.
