The Indian Malt Whisky Association and the Scotch Whisky Association have signed a cooperation agreement covering sustainability, product protection and promotion, and regulatory matters of mutual interest.
Indian malt whisky pact covers authenticity and regulation
The industry bodies said in a joint statement that they would cooperate on legal protection, product authenticity, intellectual property infringements and responsible consumption.
The Indian association, established in July 2024 as a not-for-profit industry body, represents Indian malt whisky producers and works to promote quality, authenticity and standardisation.
Trade agreement provides backdrop
The cooperation pact follows the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, which took effect on July 15, 2026. The trade agreement is expected to boost Scotch sales in India by reducing import duties from 150% to 75%, with a phased reduction to 40% over the next decade.
The trade pact could also create opportunities for Indian single malt whiskies in the UK. The associations said closer engagement could support dialogue, knowledge exchange and businesses navigating opportunities in both markets.
India was the largest export market for Scotch whisky by volume in 2025, with shipments equivalent to more than 220 million bottles, the Scotch Whisky Association said. It said volumes shipped to India had doubled over the past decade.
