Hyundai Bayon has launched in India with a starting ex-showroom price of ₹9.99 lakh, as Hyundai Motor India targets at least 250,000 combined annual sales of the new SUV and its Creta model from 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • The Bayon sits between the Venue and Creta in Hyundai’s lineup and will be produced in Chennai.
  • Creta sales fell more than 9% year over year in the first half of FY27, while the mid-size utility vehicle segment grew more than 50%.
  • Hyundai will offer the Bayon with petrol and CNG powertrains, but not diesel or electric versions.

Hyundai Bayon expands the SUV lineup

Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said the combined sales target was a starting point for further growth as Hyundai seeks to retain its position in the mid-size SUV market. Until the Bayon’s launch, the Creta was Hyundai’s sole model in that segment.

The broader mid-size utility vehicle category, covering SUVs and MPVs measuring 4 to 4.4 metres, recorded sales of around 900,000 units in the last financial year, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers data. It accounted for nearly 35% of Hyundai’s domestic sales in FY26.

Creta sales decline as the segment grows

Creta volumes fell more than 9% year over year to 89,727 units in the first six months of FY27, even as the segment expanded by more than 50%. Garg attributed part of the model’s performance to supply constraints affecting diesel variants, which have waiting periods of more than one month.

Gaurav Vangaal, associate director for light vehicle production forecasting at Mobility Global, said the aim would be to attract additional customers rather than shift buyers between Hyundai models. He cautioned that competition in the segment remained intense.

Powertrains and production

Hyundai will offer the Bayon with petrol and CNG powertrains and has ruled out diesel and electric versions. Garg said the company’s research indicated petrol would account for the largest share of demand in the category.

Production will take place at Hyundai’s Chennai facility. The Bayon is expected to improve use of the plant after Venue production moved to Pune.

Broader India plans

Hyundai Motor’s India plans, announced in May 2025, call for 26 model introductions by the end of the decade: 20 internal combustion engine vehicles and six electric vehicles. The rollout includes new models, full model changes and upgrades to existing products.

Hyundai Motor Company has also committed to investing $15.5 billion in India by 2032.
