Actress Madhoo has praised Rashmika Mandanna for embracing her South Indian accent after criticism of her pronunciation, contrasting the younger actress’s response with her own years spent trying to conceal her accent in Hindi cinema.

Key Takeaways

  • Madhoo said Mandanna handled criticism with humour and confidence on Koffee with Karan.
  • Madhoo said accepting her own South Indian identity and accent took around 30 to 35 years.

Rashmika Mandanna’s response to criticism

In a video posted on Instagram as part of her I Am in Love series, Madhoo said she admired Mandanna’s appearance on season nine of filmmaker Karan Johar’s talk show Koffee with Karan.

Madhoo said Mandanna laughed about the criticism, accepted her accent and acknowledged her South Indian roots. Mandanna had said on the show that she did not see her accent as a problem and questioned why people expected her speech not to reflect her linguistic background.

Madhoo recalls hiding her accent

Madhoo said that early in her Hindi film career, she feared being judged for being South Indian. She sought an Urdu teacher and worked to improve her Hindi so that her accent would not give her away.

She said she once felt proud when people praised her Hindi, but now viewed that period differently. Reaching a point where she no longer felt the need to hide her accent took around 30 to 35 years, she said.

Screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar also defended Mandanna in a post on X, challenging her critics to try speaking Tamil and questioning their attitude toward language.
