India power demand has eased to around 234 gigawatts in late October 2026, after exceeding 250 GW for much of the month’s first half. Cooler weather and rainfall in many regions have reduced the need for cooling and irrigation.
India power demand retreats from October peak
The country’s peak demand reached 260 GW on October 5, a record for the month, and was still at 250 GW on October 15. Demand had stayed close to summer levels through mid-October after below-normal monsoon rainfall helped keep consumption elevated.
Electricity consumption rose by around 11% in September. Strong demand also coincided with elevated short-term electricity prices: the Indian Energy Exchange’s day-ahead market traded above ₹7 per unit during the first half of October.
Regional demand remains high as coal stocks fall
Gujarat and Tamil Nadu continued to see high peak demand. Gujarat’s peak was around 28.3 GW on October 24, close to its level for much of June. An industry official said weather and some industrial demand shifting to the grid could be contributing factors.
Coal inventories at domestic coal-based power plants stood at 17.3 million tonnes on October 24, down from 17.9 million tonnes on October 15 and 18.5 million tonnes at the beginning of the month.
