Tagbilaran bishop Crispin “Bai” Barrete Varquez is set to be installed on Oct. 27, 2026, returning to his home province of Bohol after 19 years leading the Diocese of Borongan.
Tagbilaran bishop installation plans
The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral Shrine-Parish in Tagbilaran City. Around 600 guests from various dioceses are expected to attend.
Cebu Archbishop Alberto S. Uy will preside, while Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose F. Advincula will deliver the homily. Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Charles John Brown is also expected to attend.
Church and government representatives discussed security, public safety, logistics and program arrangements at an Oct. 20 coordination meeting. The Bohol provincial government plans to host a civic reception for Varquez and visiting delegates on Oct. 26.
Return to Bohol
Pope Leo XIV appointed Varquez on Sept. 10 to lead the Diocese of Tagbilaran, where his journey as a priest began. He will be its eighth bishop.
Varquez recently celebrated his final Mass as bishop of Borongan during the diocese’s 66th anniversary celebration. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to that role, and he was installed on Nov. 8, 2007.
