UK emergency preparedness advice now urges households to keep enough food and water for three days in case power, water, phone or internet services are disrupted. The government launched its three-year Be Ready campaign on October 22, 2026.
Key Takeaways
- The government recommends at least three litres of drinking water per person per day, with extra for cooking and washing.
- Research cited by the government found that 13% of people felt prepared for an emergency.
What UK emergency preparedness advice covers
The campaign asks households to build a small supply of bottled water and non-perishable food, such as canned goods, dried fruit and nuts. Other suggested items include a torch and spare batteries, warm clothing, a battery-powered or wind-up FM radio, a charged power bank and essential medication.
The advice also includes cash, copies of important documents, hygiene products and supplies for babies or pets where needed. Households do not have to make all the preparations at once.
Why the campaign was launched
In a written statement to Parliament on October 22, Security Minister Dan Jarvis said winter storms and summer wildfires had shown how severe weather could disrupt essential services. The campaign also addresses other emergencies, including cyberattacks.
Government-cited research found that 84% of people wanted more information about how to prepare. More than 500 organisations, including emergency services, local authorities, businesses and community groups, have helped develop or share the advice.
Extra support for eligible households
Eligible households are encouraged to sign up for the free Priority Services Register, which helps gas, electricity and water providers identify customers who may need additional support during an interruption. In Northern Ireland, equivalent arrangements are called Customer Care Registers.
Next milestone
Social media and radio advertising is planned over the coming weeks and months, including efforts to reach families with young children and older people.
