Philippine birthday celebrations can bring relatives and friends together even when the person being honored is absent. In an account published in October 2026, writer David Haldane described holding a party for his son Drew, who was in a Los Angeles hospital nearly 12,000 kilometers away.
A party for an absent son
Haldane said his family and friends gathered for Drew’s 39th birthday, singing, blowing out candles on a cake bearing his name and raising a glass in his honor. Drew could not be reached and did not know about the party.
Haldane recalled first encountering a similar celebration about 20 years earlier, when his future wife called him on his birthday from a gathering of her friends and relatives. They sang to him, blew out candles and ate the cake while he was on another continent.
The meaning of Philippine birthday celebrations
Haldane described the custom as a way to celebrate a person’s place in a family and community, even when that person cannot be present. He also cited Filipino mother Karen Santos, who wrote that sharing a birthday meal can acknowledge the people who support and love the person being celebrated.
After hearing about Drew’s party, Haldane’s son-in-law asked whether the family could do the same for his upcoming birthday.
