The India wheat auction scheduled for October 28, 2026, will offer 101,000 tonnes, down 5,000 tonnes from the previous tender, even as flour millers ask the government to increase supplies.

Key Takeaways

  • Some millers have paid more than ₹3,100 per quintal, above the all-India average wholesale price of ₹2,910.
  • Allocations fell in several states where millers bought most of the wheat offered in the previous sale.
  • Punjab’s allocation rose to 25,000 tonnes, but a state millers’ representative called for 40,000 tonnes.

India wheat auction cuts vary by state

The reduced national allocation comes as millers say open-market availability is tight and they are relying on the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for supplies. Dharmendra Jain, president of the Roller Flour Millers’ Federation of India, said the group had suggested progressively increasing weekly auction quantities.

In Assam, Telangana and Karnataka, the October 28 allocations are lower than the quantities offered on October 21, despite strong purchases in the earlier auction. Odisha’s allocation was also reduced, after millers bought 3,050 tonnes of the 6,000 tonnes offered there.

ItemDetails
AssamOctober 21: 7,940 of 8,000 tonnes bought; October 28 allocation: 5,000 tonnes.
TelanganaOctober 21: 3,460 of 3,500 tonnes bought; October 28 allocation: 1,000 tonnes.
KarnatakaOctober 21: 5,430 of 6,000 tonnes bought; October 28 allocation: 5,000 tonnes.

Punjab millers seek a larger allocation

Punjab received an allocation of 25,000 tonnes, up from 23,000 tonnes in the previous round. In that sale, 204 successful processors and millers offered prices between ₹2,861 and ₹3,065 per quintal; 8,970 tonnes were sold at ₹3,000 or more per quintal to 72 buyers.

Naresh Ghai, president of the Roller Flour Mills Association of Punjab, called for the state’s weekly allocation to rise to 40,000 tonnes and for depot limits to reflect the concentration of nearby mills rather than a 500-tonne weekly cap. He said there were no wheat arrivals in Punjab’s mandis.

Government stocks and production

FCI held 479.92 lakh tonnes of wheat on September 1, 2026, its highest stock for that date in five years. Government procurement reached 357.57 lakh tonnes in the 2026–27 season, compared with 299.75 lakh tonnes in the previous marketing season.

India’s wheat production rose to a record 120.66 million tonnes in the 2025–26 crop year, from 117.95 million tonnes a year earlier.

Next milestone

The next weekly auction is scheduled for October 28, 2026.
