UPI transactions are running at nearly 800 million a day, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on October 25, 2026, as she highlighted the growth of the country’s digital payments system.
UPI transactions and access to finance
Sitharaman said the Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, handles more than 24 billion transactions a month. She described it as the world’s largest real-time payment system and said transaction volumes had increased nearly 13,000-fold since 2016–17.
She said the fintech ecosystem built around UPI and other digital initiatives was also helping people access credit, insurance and investment products, in many cases for the first time.
Data centres and payment infrastructure
Sitharaman also pointed to infrastructure supporting India’s digital economy. The government granted infrastructure status to data centres in 2022, while the 2026–27 Union Budget announced a tax holiday for foreign companies offering global cloud services through data centres in India.
She said a new Reserve Bank of India campus would house the Real Time Gross Settlement and National Electronic Funds Transfer systems. The campus will also include a training institute and a research wing focused on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and data centres.
