The Maharashtra drought has prompted the opposition NCP (SP) to call for a halt to water supplies for construction projects and an increase in aid for affected farmers to at least Rs 25,000 each before Diwali.

Key Takeaways

  • The state government has declared drought in 305 of Maharashtra’s 358 talukas.
  • NCP (SP) leaders said drinking water and agriculture should take priority over construction projects.
  • The party wants the announced Rs 5,000-per-farmer relief payment increased to at least Rs 25,000.

Maharashtra drought puts water allocation in focus

The demands followed an October 25, 2026 meeting chaired by NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar, where party leaders reviewed the drought and discussed measures for the coming months.

Party leader Jitendra Awhad called for an immediate halt to water allocation for builders, specifically seeking a stop to construction water supplies in Mumbai and Thane. He said ordinary citizens and farmers should take priority over commercial interests.

Fellow leader Shashikant Shinde alleged that water distribution committees were being sidelined and decisions on dam releases were being made under political pressure. He urged the government to follow established allocation rules and prioritize drinking water.

Farm relief and livestock support requested

Shinde described the state government’s announced relief of Rs 5,000 per farmer as inadequate and requested a payment of at least Rs 25,000 before Diwali. The higher amount is an opposition demand, not an announced government increase.

He also called for cattle camps to provide fodder and care for livestock. Shinde urged action against microfinance companies and other lenders he accused of harassing farmers to recover small loans despite state advisories against forced recovery during the drought.
