A Maharashtra gold theft investigation has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man and a jeweller after police alleged that the man sold his uncle’s jewellery for Rs 10 lakh and used the proceeds to buy a Mahindra Thar SUV.

How the Maharashtra gold theft was discovered

Police allege that Samar Popat Chavan stole 15 tolas of gold ornaments belonging to his cousin uncle, Umesh Maruti Chavan, and Umesh’s wife in Satave village, Kolhapur district.

According to the complaint, Samar invited his uncle to a puja ceremony for the newly purchased vehicle. Umesh discovered the jewellery was missing when he went to retrieve it from a cupboard for the ceremony.

The grandmother’s jewellery had been left untouched, raising suspicions that someone familiar with the household was involved. Umesh filed a written complaint at Kodoli Police Station.

Police arrest man and jeweller

Investigators became suspicious after learning about Samar’s vehicle purchase and questioning how he had obtained the money. Police questioned him, and he allegedly confessed to taking the ornaments.

Police also arrested jeweller Sangram Babaso More, who is accused of buying the jewellery for Rs 10 lakh.
