A Bihu troupe attack at a Durga Puja event in Assam’s Sribhumi district prompted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to direct the state’s police chief to take immediate action.
Bihu troupe attack followed song dispute
The troupe had been invited to perform at a Durga Puja programme organised by Hindustan Club. A group objected to Assamese songs being played in the Barak Valley and asked the performers not to play them.
The troupe was allegedly assaulted, and its members reportedly sustained serious injuries. The available account did not specify how many people were injured.
Chief minister directs police response
In a post on X, Sarma called the news of the attack “deeply disturbing and unfortunate” and described Bihu as part of Assam’s cultural identity.
He said he had directed Assam’s director general of police to ensure immediate action against those responsible. The account did not provide details of any arrests or other action taken.
