Midterm voter fears extend from presidential power to prices, with Democrats and Republicans expressing different concerns about which party controls Congress, a survey conducted in October 2026 found.
Key Takeaways
- Forty-four percent of voters feared President Donald Trump would be allowed to exceed his constitutional power if Republicans retained Congress.
- Twenty-eight percent were concerned about Democratic Socialists of America policies if Democrats gained control.
- Voters also worried about whether prices would come down under either party.
Midterm voter fears differ by party
The survey, conducted from October 14 to 18 among 1,000 registered voters, asked respondents to select up to two of their biggest concerns about each party controlling Congress. Those answers do not necessarily indicate their top election priorities.
If Republicans retained control, 44% of all voters said they feared Trump would be allowed to operate beyond his constitutional power. That included 74% of Democrats and 45% of independents.
If Democrats gained control, 28% of all voters were concerned about the implementation of Democratic Socialists of America policies. The figure included 54% of Republicans and 22% of independents.
Price concerns under either party
Among all voters, 22% said they were concerned Democrats would fail to bring down prices if they gained control of Congress. If Republicans retained control of both chambers, 24% said they worried whether prices would come down.
In a separate question about the most important issues facing the country, affordability ranked highly across the political spectrum. Democrats and independents also listed government corruption as a top priority, while Republicans listed immigration and border security.
The survey was conducted by Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies.
