Duterte impeachment presiding officer Francis Escudero said on October 25, 2026, that he would decline an offer to become Philippine vice president if Sara Duterte were removed from office through impeachment, citing a conflict of interest.

Duterte impeachment officer cites conflict

Escudero said accepting the position after participating in the impeachment trial would be inappropriate because senators would have made the decision on Duterte’s case.

He stressed that no one had offered him the job and that his view was personal, not a recommendation to other senators. He also said he remained impartial and had not decided how he would vote.

How a vice-presidential vacancy would be filled

Under the Philippine Constitution, the president nominates a member of the Senate or House of Representatives to fill a vice-presidential vacancy. Confirmation requires a majority vote of all members of each chamber, voting separately.

Escudero pointed to former senator Teofisto Guingona Jr., who was appointed vice president by then-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo following the departure of Joseph Estrada.
