A video of a grandmother in Kerala teaching children cursive writing in sand has drawn attention online for its simple approach to practice.
Cursive writing on a reusable surface
Known locally as Ashaatti Ammumma, the woman appears in an Instagram video sitting on the ground with a small container of sand. She spreads the sand into a thin layer and smooths it with a stick before drawing letters.
Children sitting opposite her follow the demonstrations and trace the letters with their fingers. When they need to correct a mistake or make more space, the sand can be smoothed again.
A lesson without conventional stationery
The activity gives the children a way to repeat their writing practice without notebooks, pens or crayons. The reusable sand surface also avoids using a new sheet of paper for each attempt.
The video was shared by the Instagram account Mom of Safaachiii and has prompted viewers to note the low-waste nature of the method.
