The BITS Pilani curriculum has been redesigned to give undergraduates more flexibility, make research and projects integral to their studies, and introduce a wellbeing requirement, group vice chancellor V Ramgopal Rao said on October 25, 2026.
Key Takeaways
- The revised curriculum combines science, engineering and computing with electives across other disciplines.
- Students must complete 30 experience points, equivalent to approximately 60 hours of activities.
- BITS said it spent more than Rs 50 crore in 2026 upgrading undergraduate laboratories at three campuses.
What the BITS Pilani curriculum changes
Rao said the redesign responds to artificial intelligence’s impact on education and growing mental health concerns. It combines foundations in science, engineering and computing with exposure to humanities and arts, design thinking, entrepreneurship and real-world problem-solving.
Research and project work are part of undergraduate studies through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme, Advanced UROP and Super UROP. Students can work on societal problems with funding to develop and test solutions, while the institute’s Practice School offers industry mentorship and entrepreneurship pathways.
Experience points and laboratory upgrades
The new Points of Experience framework requires students to complete 30 points, representing approximately 60 hours of activities. These can include fitness, creative pursuits, wellbeing workshops, social conduct and community engagement. The points are a formal curriculum requirement but do not carry academic credit.
BITS said it spent more than Rs 50 crore during 2026 upgrading undergraduate laboratories at its Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses. The curriculum also includes emerging fields such as AI, data science, software construction, quantum information and computation, astronomy and materials chemistry. Electives allow students to explore subjects beyond their primary area of study.
