India bond yields ended little changed on October 28, 2026, as short covering helped government bonds recover from losses driven by concerns about high oil prices and inflation. The benchmark 6.94% bond maturing in 2036 closed at a yield of 7.44%, after trading between 7.42% and 7.49%.
India bond yields recover from session highs
Traders said the benchmark yield’s failure to reach 7.50% for a second consecutive session triggered short covering, in which traders buy securities to close positions that would benefit from falling prices. A foreign-bank trader identified 7.50% as a key technical resistance level for the 10-year yield.
The recovery was tentative as elevated crude prices and the approaching Federal Reserve decision restrained demand. Brent crude was near $115 a barrel amid supply concerns following a reported attack on Saudi Arabia’s largest refinery.
Rate markets brace for further tightening
The rupee was last at 95.22 per US dollar, after touching 94.46 the previous week. Its renewed decline has raised concerns that the Reserve Bank of India may need to tighten policy further. The central bank raised its repo rate and shifted its policy stance earlier in October.
Overnight indexed swaps rose as traders priced in 100 to 125 basis points of rate increases over the following 12 months. The one-year swap rose 4.5 basis points to 6.68%, the two-year gained 6.75 basis points to 6.74%, and the five-year climbed 6.25 basis points to 6.8775%.
Investors also awaited the US central bank’s decision after Indian market hours. The Federal Reserve’s October meeting calendar scheduled a two-day policy meeting for October 27–28 and a press conference on October 28. The Fed was widely expected to hold rates, while investors looked for guidance on future policy.
