ECB president Christine Lagarde will step down on February 7, 2027, before her scheduled term ends, the European Central Bank said on October 29, 2026.

ECB president’s scheduled term

Lagarde’s presidential term was due to end on October 31, 2027. The ECB’s Executive Board terms of office lists her start date as November 1, 2019.

Her planned departure would come nearly nine months before the scheduled end of that term. The ECB said its Governing Council gave Lagarde a standing ovation.

Announcement precedes rate decision

The announcement came ahead of the ECB’s latest interest-rate decision, which was due later on October 29. The central bank’s Governing Council sets monetary policy for the euro area.
